What is Wi-Fi technology?
Wi-Fi is a technology that allows us to connect various devices like computers, laptops, cameras, tablets, cell phones etc to the Internet without the use of cables or wires. Wi Fi is also used to develop a communication among various devices within a particular limited area. It is a worldwide phenomenon that provides internet connectivity by using radio waves.
Wi-Fi stands for wireless fidelity. Now a days, this technology is widely used at homes, institutes, banks, railway stations, airports, libraries and even at some hotels and restaurants.
Basic functionality or working principle of a Wi-Fi device.
As I mentioned earlier, Wi-Fi uses radio waves to provide network connectivity. For accessing a Wi Fi connection, following essential elements are required:
- Radio Signals
First of all, a wireless adapter is used to create hot-spot. Adapters are used to translate the data signals into radio signals. These radio signals are received by the Wi-Fi receivers. By Wi-Fi receivers, we mean the computers, printers, phones that have Wi-Fi card. Most of them have an inbuilt Wi-Fi card and the user is just required to enable the Wi-Fi option on his / her device.

There is an ongoing series of Wi Fi technologies. With the increase in advancement, new technologies continue to pop up.

It has the lowest cost and a very effective signal range. The radio signals used are unregulated and have a frequency of 2.4GHz. Other devices with the same frequency range can interfere in the WiFi radio signals as the radio signals are unregulated. To avoid the interference, we need to keep appliances like oven, Bluetooth devices, cordless phones etc at a reasonable distance. It has provided increased throughput at a lower cost.
Both WiFi-802.11a and WiFi-802.11b were created at the same time. It has higher frequency (around 5GHz) and more cost. It is used in offices and work places due to its increased cost. The higher frequency results in shortened range of networks. Other appliances cannot interfere in WiFi-802.11a signal because the radio signals are regulated.
This uses a similar frequency band as that of WiFi-802.11b i.e. 2.4GHz but it has more cost than WiFi-802.11b.It has a good signal range and maximum speed (54 Mbit/sec) and the same transmission scheme as that of WiFi-802.11a.
It has improved the Wi-Fi technology level to a greater extent. It has multiple inputs multiple output (MIMO) antennas which increase the signal intensity and provide better range than earlier technologies. It has the fastest maximum speed and it is highly resistive to interference from other sources.
It is the latest technology which provides the fastest speed in a low budget.

- Wi Fi connections are completely secure and safe.
- Wi Fi provides a very fast internet connection and the cost of cables and wires are also eliminated.
Wi-Fi technology is a fast growing technology and there is a lot of scope for future development. So we can’t say that when we will use new and updated version of Wi Fi technology but more or less fundamental will be the same.
