Cutting the Ice Cube or bar in your desired shape is really an art. But do you know that How to cut Ice cubes, because many of you tried this with knife but exactly that was breaking of Ice Cubes or bars. So here in this project you will get a scientific approach of cutting Ice. Here for cutting ice we will Speed up melting process of ice with the help of a pressure (applied force).
Required Items for Project:
- One tray of ice cube
- A container and tray to keep things from getting well
- A piece of strong Thread with some weight or can use any metal strip
Start “Cutting Ice Cube” Project:
Put container on tray and then put an Ice cube on container or plastic box. Now your work table is ready. Now Use thread with some weight as shown in figure. Place the thread over Ice Cube carefully.
Wait and Watch it for around 5 minutes. Now you will find thread is cutting Ice very slowly.
Same process we can do with a metallic knife but here we will use only to apply pressure on ice.
What’s going On over Ice Cube?
Here on the ice surface we have applied pressure with thread. The hanging weight which is continuously pulling thread in downward direction so resultant due to this applied pressure Ice cube is melting near thread surface. Here melting rate of Ice can be control by these hanging weights. If more pressure applied (more weight) then melting rate of ice increases and we will get result fast.
On the same way we can joint two Ice Cubes. Here just take two Ice cubes. Press these two cubes towards each other. Due to high pressure Ice will melt on joining surface and when we release pressure it will again freeze and due to freezing both Ice cube will be stuck together. Same phenomenon is occurring here.
Note That, here in experiment no temperature changes done
Melting point of material can be shifted downward (lower) if we increase pressure.
