How to make battery from soda water?
Preparing a battery with soda water is quite interesting and also it seems very new trick for preparing a battery. But here I would interrupt you. Because it is not a trick it is a proven scientific experiment and at the end of 1800 century battery was made by this method. So come back to the point “How to make battery from soda water?”
So let’s start this experiment.
Note: This battery can generate approximately 1 volt only. So as a load only a single Small LED is enough.
Required Material List for Experiment “Battery from soda water”:
- Soda Water Bottle or coca cola bottle
- One paper cup or any non-conductive material cup
- Aluminum strip
- Copper Strip
- LED (Light Emitting Diode)
- Electric Wire
- Scissor, Tape, Clip etc
First of all collect all material which are in above list.
Pour around 100-150 ml soda water in paper cup. If you don’t have paper cup you can use any plastic cup or glass cup also. Glass biker is also a good option. Here in our battery soda water will work as electrolyte. If you don’t have soda water you can use coca cola. However here we need some acidic solution.
Now we required two metal strips and it should be different material. Here in list you can use any of two materials.
List of Electrode Metals:
Gold – Very expensive don’t use for this experiment
Mercury- It is a toxic material don’t use for this experiment
Silver- Also it is an expensive Material.
Copper– Easily available in hardware shop.
Lead– Toxic material, not recommended for this experiment
Nickel– You can use Nickel coated iron strip
Iron- Easily available in hardware shop.
Zinc- you can get it from old Pencil cell.
Aluminum- Easily available in hardware shop.
As per availability Copper and Aluminum is the best choice any these metal strips are easily available in market.
After getting the metal strip clean it properly. Normally copper and Aluminum both metal react in open atmosphere and a thin layer deposited so clean these strip properly by sand paper.
After cleaning these strips place it in soda water cup. These strips should be place in such a way so that they can’t be in touch with each other.
Now your battery is ready. Here Aluminum strip will be your positive electrode and copper strip will be your negative electrode.
With the help of multi-meter you can check battery voltage by red probe on aluminum strip and black probe on copper strip. Here you will get approximate 0.5~0.9 volt DC. If your voltage is less than 0.5 Volt clean your metal strip properly.
Now after checking voltage output, connect LED (Light Emitting Diode) to battery. In a LED you will get two legs. Longer leg is called positive terminal & shorter leg is called negative terminal. Now connect positive terminal of LED to Aluminum strip & negative terminal of LED to Copper strip.
You will get a very low intensity of LED light. Light intensity of LED depends on current & voltage means it requires a powerful battery. So by this method you can make more soda batteries and connect in series for increasing voltage level and connect in parallel for increasing current.
After completing this experiment don`t use coca cola or soda water for drinking.
