DIGITAL SCORE TRACKER
A digital score tracker is a circuit which can be used in place of dice and as we know that dice counts only from 1 to 6 but our digital score tracker counts from 0 to 9. So you can play all conventional board games with it but in a faster manner (for example you use this circuit in playing snake and ladder game, reaching 100 is much faster as highest number which can come in this case is 9). Required electronic components
- A seven segment display(LTS 542)
- Three ICs( NE555, 74LS192, 74LS247)
- 4 switches
- 3 resistors( 100K, 10K, 1K) and 2 of 560ohm
- 2 capacitors( 0.01 uF,2.2 uF)
- Connection wires
- 9 V DC source
How to assemble
Arrange all the components as shown in the following diagram. Be careful when you are mounting it on PCB. If you are doing soldering for the first time take help of an experienced person. You can also do the same arrangement in bread board( which is easier then mounting).
Working of Circuit
In digital score tracker, we are making use of a timer (NE555), a counter (74LS192), and a decoder (74LS247). Counter used in the circuit can count from both the sides (up as well as down). S1 here resets the counter. As we switch on the supply, timer produces a clock; frequency of this clock is dependent on R1 and C2. When we press S2, counter will count in up mode (i.e. it will behave as up counter) and when we will press S3, counter will count in down mode (i.e. it will behave as down counter). Whatever is the count; it will be decoded and then displayed.
Now your digital score tracker is ready. Using it is really simple switch on the supply and reset counter by pressing S1. Press S2 or S3 and counter will hold last count, press S4 to display your score.
Safety during work
Before switch on power source (9 volt battery) of digital score tracker, Ensure that all wiring is complete. There should not be any open wire. Keep ICs in correct direction because many student count IC`s pin from wrong direction. So refer IC data sheet before connection. Use Tape in all joints of wire because it may short or cause of loose connection.
